HHS HIGHLIGHTS – MARCH, 2015

Congratulations to the fifty students inducted into the National Honor Society.

HHS Library/Media Specialist participated in 3 workshops this month:  The Spring Conference of the NJ Association of School Librarians, a “3-D Printing for High School” Program offered by Bergen County Technical Schools (to better understand how to use the newly donated 3-D Printer), and NJ Maker’s Day at Ridgewood Public Library (to better understand how to organize a maker station in the HHS Library/Media Center).

“How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying” has had a full month of major rehearsal times and we’re almost ready!  We look forward to hosting the senior citizens in Hawthorne for our final dress rehearsal.  The Peer Leaders will help assist our guests as the seniors enjoy a light supper followed by the performance.

The Italian Club participated in the St. Joseph’s Day Procession sponsored by the San Giuseppe Santa Croce Camerina Society in town.

During Foreign Language Week a poster contest was held in collaboration with The Clarion.  Italian and Spanish students’ posters were viewed online and voted on by staff, students and family.  The winner of the contest received a Dunkin Donuts gift card courtesy of the Spanish and Italian Clubs.

Math Classes celebrated Pi day with discussions of ratios and calculation of Pi for three different items (York Peppermint Patty, Moon Pi, Oatmeal Pi).  Also, they watched a special video, “Ancient Computer”, to see the application of Pi in solving early problems in astronomy.

Students in all classes were encouraged to participate in “Pi Day” held at the Hawthorne Public Library.

Advanced Placement courses will begin reviewing for AP Exams with a variety of open-ended and multiple choice questions from previous years’ exams.

AP Chemistry conducted a freezing point depression experiment in which they designed their own procedure.  The experiment consisted of creating a solution of two weak acids; then, raising the temperature to analyze the affected freezing point.

Twitter (@davidsonphysics) presently has 211 followers and over 1250 tweets.  Almost all of these tweets are related to Physics current events, changes in homework assignments, or clarification/correction of topics discussed in class.

The Class of 2017 is having a T-Shirt Sale for April and a Cinco de Mayo Smorgasbord on May 5th.

The “Bring your own Device” initiative has allowed more student centered activities in Social Studies classes, including a “History Facebook” project.

Students in the Legal Issues class “filed” small claims complaints against a variety of defendants who caused damages, from a bad auto mechanic, to a hurt puppy, to an inept plumber.  They prepared their case for trial listing the evidence they would need for court.

Students in the Contemporary Issues class are writing an article for the school newspaper to raise awareness on the issue of Human Trafficking.

Media Arts students are developing “white on white” photographs using Photoshop.  Additionally, they are creating perspective digital images and presenting in classroom critiques.

Tomorrows Teachers/Future Educators students visited the FDU campus for their Tomorrows Teachers Program and a campus visit.
