HHS HIGHLIGHTS – FEBRUARY, 2015

Bear With Me Graphics successfully completed a partnership with Roosevelt School to create Anti-Bullying shirts.  Students made over 400 T-Shirts in different colors, sizes and sleeve lengths.  Both the Life Skills students and Roosevelt School were extremely happy with the experience.

The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Bear With Me Graphics on February 26th was attended by Superintendent Spirito, BOE Members, Principal LaGrone, Staff and Parents.

Legal Issues in the 21st Century students explored civil law actions for recovering monetary damages.  Students acted as judge and jury determining the outcome of cases, often a difficult challenge as the law does not always keep up with ever changing technology and internet use.

Utilizing the “Bring Your Own Device” initiative, the American Studies: 1960s- 1990’s classes are working on an in-class research project for the administrations of Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter.

Anatomy & Physiology students using laptops, IPads and smart phones connected to our Destiny Program to research both the structure and function of the Endocrine System.

The Ecology Club completed its second round of trips to the third grade classes.  The focus was food chains and webs, and why recycling is so important to maintaining healthy ecosystems.

Calculus students looked at real world problems involving max and min, including how to maximize the volume of a box.

Geometry and Algebra III classes viewed videos that connect football to math and physics and used the viewership and 30 second ad cost to discuss real world business models.   http://science360.gov/series/science-nfl-football/75c4deca-05f2-40f8-89ed-6756341d204f

English II CP is working on staging and producing Romeo and Juliet in addition to reading and analyzing the text.

English IV CP students are studying William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, which began with background knowledge on how the plot-line for the play is technically ‘recycled,’ or in modern terms plagiarized.

Peer Leaders participated in Random Acts of Kindness Week (2/9-2/13).  The Peer Leaders were on the lookout and “caught” people in the act of being kind.  Those who were “caught” were rewarded with a flower lollipop to recognize their kindness.

250 students and faculty have signed up to participate in the 3rd Annual Speedball Tournament.

The Indoor Track Team participated in State Championship Meets, where two of our athletes made it to the meet of champions.

Student Council has been very busy planning the Mr. Hawthorne Competition, the Annual Blood Drive and Read Across America with the elementary schools.

Broadcasting Classes are rehearsing test episodes for their new show, “Bearly News.”  Broadcasting and Media Arts students are planning a trip to NBC in NYC.

Media Arts students are using green screen effects in video production for an Extreme Sport development.  Final Cut Express video editing software will be used.

Italian students studied Italian fashion and costumes, including the character of the Commedia dell’Arte.  Students dressed up as these characters to attend the Italian Club Carnevale Celebration.
