HHS HIGHLIGHTS – DECEMBER, 2014

Mr. Kevin Johnson, Broadcasting Instructor, worked with Ms. Theresa DiGeronimo, Library Media Specialist, to produce a video for a contest sponsored by Land’s End for a 3D Printer.  They worked with teachers and students from several departments to produce the video.  Our video won second place in the contest.  The video is available here.

Honors Art students will have their portfolio reviews for colleges in January.   Alumni Christian Maya was a guest instructor for the Honors Art Classes and gave an acrylic painting technique demonstration to the students.   The Intermediate Art classes are currently studying color theory methods and the color and black contour line styles of modern day street art.  Intro to Art students have been working on studying the color wheel, monochromatic studies and are now into Pop Art.

The SLE (Structured Learning Experience) program has initiated an internship program at HHS.

Precalculus classes are involved in a  presentation project involving Starbucks and its rate of growth as a company, as well as predicting future growth, in terms of how many locations open.

CP Geometry students followed the landing of the Philae test probe onto the comet from the Rosetta spacecraft via instructional videos and explanations regarding the relationship to geometry.  http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Space_Science/Rosetta/Touchdown!_Rosetta_s_Philae_probe_lands_on_comet

Chemistry CP students were able to get a visual on chemical bonds as it pertains to the electronic shells of atoms.  The students were then able to build off of this concept as they constructed the Lewis Structures for various covalent compounds.

The HHS Library Media Center hosted an “Hour of Code” on 12/9/14.  This session used Kahan Academy tutorials to introduce the beginners to basic computer programming and to give more experienced students an opportunity to practice their skills.  Riding on the success of the Hour of Code, the Library now hosts Tuesday Coding during lunch period.  The Math Dept. supported the Hour of Code project by showing a video that encourages students to try coding.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKIu9yen5nc

The All-School Production of “It’s A Wonderful Life” was a great success.  75 students participated in this production both on stage and behind the scenes.  Over 900 guests attended the performances.

Students in Italian Club hosted a “Festa Italiana” with a special guest appearance from “LaBefana”, the Italian Christmas Witch.  The Italian Club also attended a cultural tasting tour on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx.  Italian 3 Honors students visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC to see the annual Neapolitan Christmas Tree and other Italian Art.

Students in Ms. Hawruk’s Law Class prepared for and performed State vs. Loren Perry, a NJ State Bar Foundation Mock Trial Case.
