Journalism students are continuing their hard work writing articles for the school newspaper, The Clarion.  Visit The Clarion online via the Hawthorne High School home page.

National Honor Society students are offering tutoring services.  Students who would like a tutor should see a NHS member, their guidance counselor or Ms. Clifford.  Tutoring takes place at 7:30 each morning and after school on Wednesdays.

In English III, as an introduction to Lord of the Flies, students engaged in a team building island survival activity created and disseminated by the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard.  During this time, students learned the crucial aspects of decision making and team building in addition to being introduced to thematic components of the novel.

Flip Classroom teaching techniques are used with both AP Calculus and AP Statistics classes.  Instructional videos are utilized for students to view at home before homework assignments can be completed in class.

Congratulations to the Senior Class for winning first place during the Spirit Week Activities.

Various staff members attended a “Co-Teaching for an Effective Inclusive Classroom” workshop.  Attendees were presented with various suggestions for differentiated instructional methods which can be used in the inclusive classroom.

Broadcasting students are learning multicamera live and live to tape style productions.  Using their new skills, they taped the Homecoming Football Game on October 17th.  Our broadcasting student commentators met with a guest speaker via Skype to hear some pointers and advice regarding sports play-by-play announcing.

Students in the Life Skills/Pre-Vocational class designed signs to be displayed in the halls of HHS to promote respect and kindness.

The Creative Writing Club attended the Tour deNoir program at the Louis Bay 2nd Library on October 16th to enjoy live readings and book signings by three authors who presented themselves as “a traveling band of young adult authors with a taste for darkness.”

English III CP students presented a modern-day version of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales by writing wedding toasts for Ms. Margarucci’s wedding using a similar rhyme scheme that Chaucer used, presenting their toasts to the class, and creating a visual doll to illustrate their “character” or “pilgrim.”  It was a phenomenal project!

The Ecology Club completed its first round of field trips to the elementary schools.  The focus of the lesson given by the members was recycling and its importance.
