HHS HIGHLIGHTS – APRIL, 2015

Algebra III students researched and presented real world applications of exponential and logarithmic functions such as bacterial growth models, earthquake scales, Newton’s Law of Cooling to find time of death in forensics and the decibel scale.

Geometry Honors Technology Initiative:  Students have been studying a unit on Transformations.  Geometer’s Sketchpad was used to differentiate and enhance instruction on topics such as reflection, dilation, translations, and rotations.

The William Paterson University Chemistry Club visited our Chemistry classes to perform lab demonstrations.

Ecology Club members completed trips to the elementary schools conducting lessons on water pollution and conservation.

“How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” was a terrific success!  The 104 students in cast, crew, and pit orchestra performed at five well-attended shows.

The Gay-Straight Alliance Club participated in the Day of Silence on Friday, April 17th.  The purpose was to show support for anti-bullying in the LGBT community.  There were a total of 130 faculty and student participants.

Forty-six National Honor Society members were given their gold tassels at a dinner at the Tides Estate on April 30th.  They will proudly wear their tassels on graduation day.

Thirty Peer Leaders visited Fairview Lakes, NJ to participate in various team-building activities. They also assisted in the “Dinner and a Show Evening” with the senior citizens on April 22nd sponsored by the Municipal Alliance which included dinner prepared by the HHS Cafeteria and the dress rehearsal performance of our school play.

To engage students in National Poetry Month, the library supported the efforts of the Creative Writing Club to host HHS Poetry Day on April 16th.

The first meeting of the Makerspace Teen Advisory Group was held on April 24th.  This group will guide the creation of the new student-driven concept in hands-on literacy.

Mr. DiLonardo and Mrs. Margarucci-Fusaro successfully conducted a spring break trip to Italy.  Along with 25 students and 3 parent chaperones, they visited Florence, Rome, Naples, Pompei, Sorrento and Capri over nine days.  The trip was a great success.

The Spanish Club visited NYC for a tasting and walking tour of Spanish Harlem.

The Culinary Arts classes assisted the PTO in preparing foods and decorating trays for the amazing Teacher Appreciation Luncheon sponsored by the PTO.

Art Club members participated in the Symposium of the Arts at Roosevelt School.  It was a great event!

The SHARE Club is presently conducting a fundraiser to collect monies for Nepal relief.

Mr. & Mrs. Locicero assisted in bringing an organ donation assembly to our school.  Our junior students saw multiple powerful videos and speakers.

The Life Skills “Bear With Me Graphics” Project continues to receive orders.  The Hawthorne Baseball and Softball Program ordered 48 ‘UMPIRE’ T-Shirts.

The HHS Marching Band is preparing for parade season which includes scheduled participation in Memorial Day parades in Hoboken, Franklin Lakes, and Hawthorne.
