August 20, 2014

Last night, the Board of Education approved a revised Attendance policy (policy 5200).  The number of acceptable absences for elementary students has been reduced from 36 to 17 in a given school year.  An elementary pupil will be retained at grade level when he/she has been absent 18 or more school days.  At this level, the district will begin to enforce Policy 5240, which states every three tardies equals an unexcused absence.  Moreover, a secondary student will not earn course credit if he/she has been absent 5 times in a marking period course, 9 times in a semester course, or 18 times for the year.

The only exception is excused absences.  Excused absences arise when a student is absent for religious holidays, Take Your Child to Work Day, a suspension, a medical absence substantiated by a physician’s note, or any other absence determined to be excused by the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE).  A list of approved religious holidays can be found at this link - http://www.state.nj.us/education/genfo/holidays1415.htm.

The administration made the decision to revise the policy because the district was not meeting the NJDOE’s attendance targets.  As a result, we are designated as having chronic absenteeism, which is defined by the percentage of students who miss 10% or more instructional days in school year.

Thank you for your understanding and anticipated cooperation.

Student Accident Insurance Announcement

We want to inform parents/guardians that the district is not offering Student Accident Insurance this year. Our premium was anticipated to rise to $111,600, and this increase was not a budgeted item.  The district is not legally required to provide student accident insurance; it has been done as a courtesy in the past.  The plan had served as secondary insurance to the parent/guardian’s personal insurance plans. From August 1, 2014 forward, if there is a student injury, the claim can only be submitted to the parent/guardian’s insurance company. The voluntary accident insurance that parents can purchase will still be offered. Information about purchasing student accident insurance on your own can be found through these three links. Thank you for your understanding.
